Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

Review by Kelley Crawford

The Gods on Mount Olympus are still toying with humans today in Starcrossed. There’s a common phrase about there being a thin line between love and hate, but for Helen Hamilton that line is barely visible. She not only hates Lucas Delos when she first meets him, but she has an overwhelming sense to kill him, which she tries to do on a number of occasions. It’s not his fine looks or personable disposition that ignites fury in her; rather, it is something deeper—much deeper. Both of them are offspring of the Gods, and with that birthright comes great skill but also old grudges. Unfortunately, when Helen and Lucas finally break the spell of hate they find something even more dangerous—their love for one another. Their direct lineage is from Helen of Troy and Paris, and just like those fated lovers, Helen and Lucas’s love will only cause destruction. Now they must work together while suppressing their true desires in order to do what is right for all instead of themselves.

Starcrossed is the first book in Angelini’s modern mythological series. Her inclusion of details about the Greek Gods as well as her modern spin on how the Gods still play a role in peoples’ lives today make-up for the sections in the book that drag and are unnecessary.  In the end we don’t know what will happen to Helen and Lucas, but the good part is that you actually want to find out.

Bottom Line: Needs to be 200 pages shorter, but it’s still worth the read

Audience: If you like Edith Hamilton’s Mythology or the shows “Charmed” or “The Secret Circle,” then this book will get your mythological heart pumping.
