Review by Kelley Crawford
A Frizzy-Haired Science Nerd gets More Than her Hair Tamed in the novel
When we first meet our main character, Lucy Whitley, she is directed and strong-willed. She wants to attend a science boarding school in order to get away from her fashion-obsessed older sister, her workacholic dad, and her younger sister who sports dreadlocks and a rebellious attitude. Yet, with the arrival of a surprise half-sister, Megan, Lucy’s direction starts to waver. She forsakes her old friends, joins her older sister’s shallow and thoughtless clan (“The PGs,” aka “The Pretty Girls”), and she lets things happen to her rather than taking control of situations. In the end, everything—including her notoriously frizzy hair—has been tamed. She forgets about attending her dream school, and she winds up staying with her newly formed family in Palm Desert.
If you are looking for a fast read without much depth, this is the book for you. It’s quite sad to see our heroine, Lucy, lose her spirit and only have blips of courageous moments in her life, but at least the half-sister, Megan, speaks-up and adds a bit of spice to the book.
Bottom Line: A shallow read that lacks a moral worth discussing
Comparison: If you like Sarah Dessen then you would probably like Lori Culwell
